Food and Drink – Please do not bring food or drinks into the classroom. Only water, in a clear plastic bottle is acceptable.
Cell phones and other electronic devices – As per the student handbook.
Supplies – At a minimum, students are required to have the following materials each and every day:
Standard #2 pencils or pens ( black or blue ink only). Mechanical pencils are strongly recommended
Notebook
Calculator (e.g. TI-34II, TI-30XIIS, etc)
Binders and books will be kept in class. If students want, they may have a take home copy of the book.
Each student will be issued a Mathematical Ideas textbook at the beginning of the year. Students are strongly encouraged to keep the textbook at home.
Attendance and Missed Assignments – Please make every effort to avoid missing class time. Inevitably, there will be times during the school year when students will miss class. When this occurs, it is the STUDENT’S RESPONSIBILITY to find out what was missed and to make arrangements for completing any missed assignments, especially quizzes and tests. If you are absent, but cannot complete your assignment for any reason, you are to immediately e-mail me and let me know what assignment you are unable to complete and why. If you fail to do this, I must assume that you understand all of the material that you missed in class and are fully prepared for your return to class.
The policy for making up missed quizzes and tests is as follows:
1. Announced Quiz/Test – When a student is absent the day before an announced quiz or test, the student will take the quiz/test during the regular class period. Failure to do so will result in the student receiving a grade of zero for the quiz/test. A student who is absent the day of an announced quiz or test must take a make up quiz/test within 5 school days of returning to school. Failure to do so will result in the student receiving a grade of zero for the quiz/test. Make up quizzes/test will not normally be given during the regular class period. Make up quizzes/test must be done during any other free period, lunch period, or after school.
2. Surprise Quizzes – A student who is absent for a surprise quiz must take a make-up quiz within 5 school days of returning to school. Failure to take the make-up quiz will result in the student receiving a grade of zero for the quiz! There will never be a surprise test.
3. Extended Absences – Students who are absent from school for two or more CONSECUTIVE school days must see the teacher immediately upon returning to class in order to set up a mutually agreed upon timetable for making up all missed classwork, quizzes and tests. Failure to make arrangements with the teacher will result in the student receiving a grade of zero for ALL missed quizzes and tests.
Dress Code – The dress code described in the student handbook will be in force in this class throughout the school year.
Classroom Behavior – Discrete Math is a college level course. Students in this class are always polite, attentive and engaged in the day’s activities. Disruptive behavior severely impedes other students from learning. Rule of thumb is to behave in class as you would in the audience of a Broadway theater.
Cut Policy – See the KRHS policy on cutting class. In addition to this policy, any student who is found to have cut class for ANY reason, will receive a zero for any work that was either due or completed on the day of the cut.
Cell phones and other electronic devices – As per the student handbook.
